Athletics Kenya has postponed the first two editions of their national cross country editions set for Machakos and Iten in honour of the slain athlete

A day after World 10k women-only record holder Agnes Tirop's gruesome murder, her husband Ibrahim Rotich who is the main suspect in her killing has been arrested.

Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) report that the suspect was arrested on Thursday in Mombasa while trying to flee the country.

"Ibrahim Rotich, who was in a relationship with the athlete was arrested moments ago in Changamwe, Mombasa county, as he tried to flee to a neighboring country to evade justice.

Rotich is believed to have killed the two-time World Athletics championships bronze medalist by stabbing her before going into hiding. Tirop’s lifeless body was found lying on her bed Wednesday morning in Iten, with visible stab wounds on her abdomen," DCI announced on their twitter handle late Thursday night.

According to the sleuths, Rotich had, on Thursday around noon, rammed his getaway vehicle into a lorry at Athi River, along Mombasa road.

It is unclear whether he drove in the same vehicle to Mombasa. The suspect said to be grilled by detectives at Changamwe police station.

Rotich's arrest comes as fellow athletes and the athletics fraternity around the world continues to express their condolences to the family while calling for justice for the 25 year old.

"I am deeply shocked by the tragic death of Agnes Tirop, a young and bright talent. Her performances at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 gave hope and inspiration to so many people," International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach said in comments posted on the Olympics Twitter account.
