Chepngetich clocked 33:37.00 in a stunning sprint finish after the final bend to take gold

The odds were in favour of the three Ethiopians who lined for the 10,000m final in the ongoing African Games in Accra Ghana.

Janeth Chepngetich, the sole Kenyan to line up in the race that had just five athletes, appeared destined for a 'lesser' medal if the presence of the Ethiopians and their team was anything to go by.

However, the 25-year-old, making his debut in the African Games, stunned pre-race favorites Ethiopian Junior team gold medalist at the 2017 World Cross Country Championships Belew Wede Kefale and her Tekan Amare Behre.

Chepngetich clocked 33:37.00 in a stunning sprint finish after the final bend to take gold while Wede who was the closest competitor in the race battled by five athletes timed 33:38.37 for silver.

Amare would settle for bronze after timing 33.51.50

Mulisa Aberu Behre finished fourth with a time of 34:45.37 with Sierra Leone Kargo Theresa clocking 37:24.66 for a fifth-place finish.

Chepngetich, the Belgut Marathon winner in Kericho last year, kept pace with the leading pack of the Ethiopian for the better part of the race, at some point she had the lead prompting Wede to go after her.

Wede would stay in front with Chepngetich eventually dropping back though kept pace bidding her time to strike.

Chepngetich then surged in front after the bell but determined to win the race, Wede sprinted past the Kenyan who later zoomed past her at the final bend to bag Kenya’s sixth gold at the ongoing event.
