2021 New York City Marathon champion Albert Korir has withdrawn from the much-anticipated 2025 Boston Marathon, citing an ankle injury.

Korir broke the news with a heartfelt message on his social media handles.
“It’s with pain in my heart (and ankle) that I won’t be competing in Boston on Monday. The hard work has been put into it, but unfortunately I badly twisted my ankle last Saturday during my last fartlek. It’s been a tough decision to make. But being in Boston and competing with the best is only possible when you’re 100% physically okay," he posted.
He went on to express gratitude to the race organizers and fans for their continued support.
“Thanks, Boston Marathon, for the trust in me year after year. Success to all other champions who will compete on Monday. I will be cheering you on from home. I’ll be back," he said.
Korir finished sixth in Boston in 2022 (2:08:50), improved to fourth in 2023 (2:08:01), and secured fifth place last year in a personal Boston best of 2:07:47.
His consistency on the demanding course had made him one of the more reliable Kenyan contenders in recent editions.
Despite Korir’s absence, the 2024 edition of the Boston Marathon remains fiercely competitive.
Returning to the Hopkinton-to-Boston course are six of the top seven finishers from last year, including two-time winner Evans Chebet, who placed third in 2023, and John Korir, fresh off his Chicago Marathon triumph, who was fourth in Boston last year.
Also in the mix are Cyprian Kotut and Haymanot Alew, who took second and third, respectively, at last year’s Berlin Marathon—both boasting lifetime bests under 2:04.
World champion Victor Kiplangat is eyeing history as he bids to become the first Ugandan man to win the race, while Ethiopia’s Muktar Edris, a two-time world 5000m champion, makes his much-anticipated marathon debut.
Other major names include Ethiopia’s Lelisa Desisa, a two-time Boston winner; Kenya’s Daniel Mateiko; Tanzania’s Alphonce Felix Simbu; Lesotho’s Tebello Ramakongoana; Kenya’s Abel Kipchumba; and Ethiopia’s Yemane Haileselassie.
The American contingent is led by Conner Mantz and Clayton Young, who finished eighth and ninth, respectively, at the Olympic marathon last year and later posted top-10 finishes in New York.
Albert Korir, the 2021 New York City Marathon champion who has finished in the top 5 at the Boston Marathon the last two years, has announced that he is OUT for next Monday's race.
