Oilers suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Impala who were from a dark season.

Menengai Oilers served the biggest upset of the Enterprise Cup Round of 16 after going down to relegated Impala Saracens on Saturday after a memorable season.

Oilers won the hearts of many rugby fans following their impressive season in the Kenya Cup that saw them contest their first final but went down to Kabras Sugar RFC.

Speaking to Mozzart Sport, Oilers head coach Gibson Weru could not hide his disappointment after suffering a 24-17 loss at the hands of Impala to end their impressive season with nothing to show for it.

“I must give credit to Impala, they played really well my side did not get to our rhythm, we slowly and got to our rhythm before half time but we did not start well. I gave chances to most of the young players, it was very disappointing but we now have to start focusing on the 2022/2023 season,” said Weru.

Oilers finished third in the Kenya Cup and upset eight-time champions KCB RFC who had bagged the last four titles in the semi-final.

Weru however fielded a second-string side, changing almost the entire team that gave Kabras a run for their money in the final and went on to explain his decision.

“There is a huge gap between the guys who played the final and the guys who played against Impala, everyone who started in the final did not start on Saturday. The boys needed to rest and that was our reason for not fielding them against Impala but then again the players were training, we thought they could come out and compete but unfortunately, they did not,” added Weru.
