Talking points from the Safari Sevens

This was the first major rugby event to have fans since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic

After a one-year hiatus, the Safari Sevens made a comeback with Shujaa reclaiming the title for the first time in five years. Here are the talking points from the weekend tournament.

Exciting pool of talent

With Kenya Under 20 side, Chipu finishing 10th, KCB eighth, Morans third and Shujaa claiming the title, Kenyan teams fared well in the tournament with KCB managing to beat Spain in Pool games, a core team in the HSBC World Seven Series.

Augustine Lugonzo and Mohamed Omollo were instrumental for Morans and it will not be a surprise to see them being considered ahead of the 2021-2022 World Series.

Fans back on the stands

This was the first major rugby event to have fans back in the stands since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic back in March 2020 and it surpassed expectations with all the funfare.

Kenyan fans did not disappoint as they were vociferous especially on Day Two of the event which was generously attended and were one of the reasons for the impressive performances by Kenyan teams.

Players knocking on the door

Alvin Marube made a name for himself in the Vancouver and Edmonton 7s and continues to prove that he is one of the best emerging talents in the game.

Timothy Mmasi and Blak Blad winger Arcadius Khwesa who have been in the scene for some time now have now come of age and are serious contenders of being regulars in the Shujaa team.

Work cut out

Despite suffering only one defeat in the tournament, Shujaa have their work cut out if they are to replicate their performances in last season’s World Series were they finished third.

Shujaa were not convincing and failed to dominate their opponents with the only convincing win coming against a hapless Stallions side and Zimbabwe.

Injera not out yet

Collins Injera has been overlooked in recent Shujaa squads but when he turned out for Samurai International in the Safari Sevens he evoked memories of his glory days.

The second all-time try-scorer in the sevens game might not possess the wheels he once had but he is still a graceful move, incisive runner and mesmeric stepper whose experience can come in handy for Shujaa.
