After four days of action-packed matches, the 2024 Nyanza Region Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Term Two games came to a screeching halt on Saturday, 13 July in Kisii.
Relief washed over the games as the final day concluded peacefully, a stark contrast to the previous day's chaos, where violence unfortunately disrupted matches.
As expected, hundreds of fans turned up to cheer on their favourite teams. The matches were played at Cardinal Otunga Mosocho High School and Kisii High School.
Rugby 7s
St Mary's Yala picked up from where they left off to defeat lesser-known Anjego High School 24-5. The win saw Yala successfully defend their title.
Brian Ooko, Innocent Murunda, Joseph Onyango and Albert Otieno scored the winning tries to propel Yala to the nationals.
In an exclusive interview with Mozzart Sport after the win, Yala coach George Kerima was proud of his charges' performance, noting that they had what it takes to perform well in not only the nationals but also the East African games.
“Many did not believe in our potential when we came to Kisii but we have shown why we are a rugby power house. This win is for the boys and we want to return to East Africa after last year’s debut,” a visibly excited Kerima offered.
The two finalists will be joined by Kisii School at the national finals. Kisii were in the form of their lives, defeating Otieno Oyoo High School 17-12 in sudden death to finish third.
Otieno Oyoo's fate is dependent on whether North Eastern will field a rugby team. If they fail to do so, Otieno Oyoo automatically qualifies for the nationals.
In the girls' category, on-form Nyakach Girls were crowned the winners after dethroning Nyagichenche 5-0.
Nyakach and Nyagichenche will be joined in the nationals by Nyakongo and Sidindi. The previous saw off the latter 12-10.
Speaking after the match, Sidindi head coach Gerald Ochieng was pleased that his team showcased such zeal on their KSSSA debut .
“It’s our first time at the regionals and we are going to nationals. This is a very impressive result for the school and the girls are majorly made up of form ones. We will be ready to show our talents at the nationals,” Ochieng told Mozzart Sport.
