KCB RFC begin Great Rift 10s on a high

Only six teams turned up for this year's rescheduled showpiece
Despite the presence of only six teams, among them three Kenya Cup sides, the Great Rift 10s went on as planned at the Nakuru Athletic Club on Saturday 20 May.
KCB RFC, Nakuru RFC and Blak Blad were the only Kenya Cup sides. Great Rift 10s aside defending Champions Menengai Oilers did not turn up for the tournament.
Pool B
Former Kenya Cup defending Champions KCB RFC bounced back to winning ways following a 51-0 effortless win over Technical University of Kenya.
The Bankers, under the tutelage of former Kenya 7s captain Andrew Amonde started off well, scoring through a high-flying Geoffrey Okwach. Isaac Njoroge added the extras.
Following that, Fidel Maina, who made his debut during the 2023 Enterprise Cup finals added a brace. Another brace followed through Trevor Odawa.
More tries followed from the bankers before the sound of the final whistle.
The Ruaraka-based club had a disappointing finish in the 15s season and are seeking to better their performance in the shorter version of the game.
Pool A
Kenyatta University rugby team, Blak Blad were off to flying starts, holding off Kabarak University 26-7 in the first match of the day. The students are set to play hosts Nakuru RFC in their second match of the day.
Kabarak University also suffered another loss in the hands of hosts Nakuru RFC. Among the try scorers were speedster Hannington Wabwire and Felix Okoth.
Kenya Cup sides Nakuru RFC and Blak Blad RFC will face off in the opening match of round two.
The Great Rift 10s is making a comeback after three years in the cold due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this time with the full sponsorship of the Nakuru County Government.
The 30th edition that was to be held on 20 and 30 April was postponed due to lack of resources.
Fans will also be treated to a Currie Cup match pitting Kenya Simbas and Zimbabwe Goshawks later in the day.
