The hard-fought win saw them secure a home semifinal as well as a potential final
Kabras RFC ended their regular season on a high after defeating KCB Rugby 14-10 in the closely contested Kenya Cup match played on Saturday, 9 March at the ASK Kakamega Showground.
The hard-fought win saw them secure a home semifinal as well as a potential final. The performance also saw them finish the season with 54 out of a potential 55 available points.
Several players were missing from the initial lineup. The Sugarmen were forced to rely on vintage players like Brian Tanga and Walter Okoth. Jone Kubu and Derrick Ashiundu were among the missing players despite the initial hype.
It was KCB Rugby who struck first through Darwin Mukidza's lightning speed. Trevor Odawa managed the conversion to see the Bankers take an early lead.
The try served as a morale-booster to the Sugarmen who responded with a five-pointer thanks to captain George Nyambua. Ntabeni Dukisa's conversion fell short.
The match was on, and Kabras RFC kept piling pressure on their opponents, forcing them to stay in their danger zone. The Bankers succumbed to the pressure and soon it was Festus Shiasi heading to the naughty chair for a high tackle on Dukisa.
The Sugarmen then capitalized on the numerical advantage to score a penalty through Dukisa. That would be the final business for the opening half. HT scores 8-7. Kabras RFC leading.
The hosts came breathing fire in the closing half to extend their lead with Dukisa successfully converting two penalties within five minutes, bringing the score to 14-7. The second half saw both sides exchange yellow cards. Walter and Kolian Persina were sent off for 10 minutes.
In the dying minutes of the game, Mukidza showcased his prowess with a penalty kick which would be the last score for the day to see the full-time score at 14-10 in favour of Kabras RFC.
