“It is a joy that I cannot explain being here because I am making my debut in the team in such a prestigious tournament. It is definitely an honour because we are representing a country with over 50 million people and all the eyes are on us. So, our aim is just to give our all together with my teammates,” the player told Mozzart Sport.
“I would definitely not be here without my big brother Francis Otieno because he has done a lot for me to progress in my career. Whenever I wanted anything, it was him to turn to always so I am just grateful and I want to dedicate this moment to him,” he revealed.
Having come on as a second half substitute against Samoa in the opener for his debut, where Kenya went down fighting as they lost 25-34, Omondi was entrusted with a starting berth in the second game against Spain and got full minutes in the team’s 18-48 loss.
In the final Pool B game against Hong Kong China on Tuesday, the player, who featured in all games in the 22/23 Eric Shirley Shield for Quins, will once again start as an openside flanker as hosts Kenya try to get their first win in the global tourney.
And after missing out on selection in the Chipu squad that took part in the U20 Barthes Trophy where Kenya finished second, Omondi, who was left out due to concussion, revealed his delight in finally being given the chance to play for his country, a sign of good things to come.
“I feel very happy and I am really grateful to God because my story is something miraculous. I really feel good to be given this opportunity and it feels like my dreams have started to come true and the doors to my budding rugby career have started opening,” he said.
“The support from my family – mum, brothers - and other coaches who used to advise me to give my all is what gave me the chance and for that I am grateful,” he concluded.
