Date set for U20 Barthés Trophy in Nairobi

This edition will see the tournament revert back to the eight team format.

The 2022 edition of the U20 Barthés Trophy will commence on April 9th all through to April 17th with the Kenya Under 20 side (Chipu) hoping to retain their title.

Rugby Africa announced the successful bid of Kenya Rugby to host the U20 Barthés Trophy, sponsored for three consecutive years in 2020 with this edition set to be the last.

Speaking at a Rugby Africa 2022 season launch, Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Chairman Geoffrey Gangla was elated to host the tournament for the third successive time and was delighted to have fans back for the forthcoming edition.

“Kenya is privileged to host the Barthes U-20 tournament. This is the third time we are hosting the tournament. Last year, we did not have spectators because of the Coronavirus pandemic. This year, we have the fans back. Kenya is ready to host the tournament,” said Gangla.

This edition of the only junior tournament in Africa will have 8 countries taking part; Kenya (Hosts), Tunisia, Zimbabwe, Cote D'Ivoire, Madagascar, Zambia, Senegal and Namibia.

Rugby Africa also confirmed the expansion of the Africa 7’s tournament that is set to be hosted in Kampala, Uganda with the men’s edition increased from eight teams to 14 and eight to 12 for the women.

Kenya Simbas are set to renew their rivalry against Uganda in the 2023 Rugby World Cup Africa qualifiers with Gangla admitted that the game will be a closely fought battle.

“We look forward the challenge to face Uganda in Marseille. Such matches are very, very close. It will be exciting as well.” Added Gangla.
