Shujaa bagged only their second win of the season
The national men's rugby sevens side, Shujaa registered their first win in the Cape Town leg of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series and also claimed bragging rights following a 19-5 derby victory over Uganda.
Shujaa dropped into the 13th-place semi-final following a Golden Point loss to Ireland in the 9th-place quarter-final after being locked in a 14-all draw in regular time where Jordan Conroy was the chief tormentor.
Kenya had a lot of ball in hand in the opening minutes of the game but they could not convert their possession into points with poor ball-handling skills costing them as they struggled to string a number of phases together.
Edmond Anya spotted a gap in the Uganda defense and exploited it but he did not have the distance with Dennis Etwau recovering to tackle him but he did not release and prevented a try which led to him being sin banned.
Shujaa finally landed their first try when a pick tap from Ronnie Omondi opened up space for Tony Omondi who dotted down but he could not convert his own try as Kenya went into the halftime break with a 5-0 lead.
Damian McGrath’s side picked up from where they left off in the second half with some brilliant play for Anya who offloaded the ball to Daniel Taabu to cross the whitewash with Tony Omondi adding the extras.
Kenya were caught napping in defense when Timothy Kisiga managed to slip through easily to register Uganda’s first try in the game but they could not nail the conversion.
Taabu was in inspired form against Uganda as he bumped off two of their players using sheer strength to bag his second try of the half as Omondi completed the conversion for a 19-5 win.
Shujaa will now face Canada in the 13th-place final.
