The Ugandans enter the eight-nation tournament as the bottom seeded team and will face top-seed and defending champions Kenya in the first round.

Uganda U20 head coach Lumu Richard has named a 25-man squad that will represent the country in the upcoming Rugby Africa U20 Barthes Trophy that is set to be held in Nairobi, Kenya from 9-17th April 2022 at the Nyayo National Stadium.

The noisy neighbours will be making an appearance in the tournament after missing the previous four editions held.

With eight teams confirmed for this year’s edition – Kenya, Namibia, Zambia, Uganda, Tunisia, Madagascar, Ivory Coast and Zimbabwe - the Ugandans enter the eight-nation tournament as the bottom seeded team and will face top-seed and defending champions Kenya in the first round.

The tournament will be played in a knockout format with the winners proceeding to the main cup semifinals and the losers dropping to the placement matches.

This year, the Barthes Trophy will have a full eight teams fighting for the title after only three teams showed up last year due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Kenya’s Chipu edged Madagascar 21-20 in the 2021 Barthes Cup final to retain the title they won back in 2019 with the 2020 edition failing to kick-off due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The U/20 Barthes trophy is the Rugby Africa U/20 championship. Teams compete on an annual basis, and the winners of the competition earn the right to represent the African continent at the World Rugby Junior Trophy.
