The noisy neighbours will be making an appearance in the tournament after missing the previous four editions held.

The tournament will be played in a knockout format with the winners proceeding to the main cup semifinals and the losers dropping to the placement matches.
This year, the Barthes Trophy will have a full eight teams fighting for the title after only three teams showed up last year due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.
Kenya’s Chipu edged Madagascar 21-20 in the 2021 Barthes Cup final to retain the title they won back in 2019 with the 2020 edition failing to kick-off due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The U/20 Barthes trophy is the Rugby Africa U/20 championship. Teams compete on an annual basis, and the winners of the competition earn the right to represent the African continent at the World Rugby Junior Trophy.
