37 year old Amonde retired from the national team after leading Shujaa to a 9th place finish in the conluded Tokyo Olympics
Inspite hanging his boots on the international scene, former Shujaa captain Andrew Amonde has allayed fears that he is also done on the local front as he revealed that he still has enough gas left in his tank to continue playing with eight time Kenya Cup champions KCB in the domestic rugby league.
In the postponed 2020 Olympics that recently took place in Tokyo, Japan, Amonde donned the national team colours for the last time as he announced that the Olympic outing would be his swan song with the Shujaa national team.
After captaining the Innocent 'Namcos' Simiyu side to a ninth place finish in the Tokyo summer games, Amonde came back just in time to find the 2021 Kenya Cup season still in session.
In a challenging season that KCB lost once and finished in second place behind Kabras, the veteran player saved his best heroics for the final title deciding fixture where he scored one of the two tries that stunningly and remarkably saw KCB come from trailing 20-0 at half time against Kabras Sugar, to levelling the scores at 25-25 in the last five minutes of regulation time before going on to win 25-28 in sudden death extra time.
Speaking after the thrilling finale held at Nandi Bears Club on Saturday afternoon, the adored 37 year old affirmed to his fans that he will still be very much a part of the local scene as he is still determined to represent KCB.
"I will still be available locally to play for KCB. I feel I can still play a lot of rugby and I am still a very big part of our KCB squad. I would like to push them until the very day that I will not be able to run anymore. So no need to worry as I will still be playing for KCB. I might not be playing for the national teams but I will be there in the local league," Amonde told Mozzart Sport.
In helping KCB to their eighth Kenya Cup crown and a four peat, Amonde expressed his delight at the character showed by his side to comeback from behind and maintain their supreme dominance over Kabras that has seen them win five out of five cup finals against Kabras.
"It was one of the perfect finals. It was never an easy one and I think we came out on top due to the mental strength that we have," the retired Kenyan international remarked.
