The win marks her second W15 Doubles title after clinching the Nairobi leg in November 2022

2022 Wimbledon Girls’ Doubles champion Angella Okutoyi and her French partner Beverly Nyangom are the new champions of the ITF Monastir W15 Women’s Doubles.

In the tournament played in Monastir, Tunisia they edged out their opponents - Gaia Parravicini and Samira De Stefano 6-4, 3-6 (10-2) in a finals matchup on Saturday afternoon.

From breaking out to a 6-4 set win, the Kenyan and French unseeded duo was forced to decide the game via a tie-breaker after giving up the second set 3-6 to the fourth seeds, eventually romping to a 10-2 victory that secured the overall win in the remarkable final.

The victory marks another W15 doubles victory for the 19 year old Okutoyi after winning the second edition of the W15 ITF Women's World Tennis Tour tournament held at the Karen Country Club in November 2022.

Then, Okutoyi partnered up with Indian partner Bhasin Smriti as the duo upstaged first-seeded Balu Sharmada (India) and Leon Sebastiani (USA) in straight sets of 6-3, 7-5.

The first Kenyan to win a Grand Slam alongside Polish partner Malwina Rowinska, also lifted the Girls Doubles title at the J1 Repentigny tournament that took place in Canada in September last year.

Saturday’s win was special given the fact that the duo entered the tournament unseeded, but went all the way past their opponents - first seeing off Chahd Beriri and Roua Limem without dropping a game, before stunning the top seeded Abigail Amos (Great Britain) and Arabella Koller (Austria) 6-2, 6-1 in the quarter finals.

The semifinal on Friday was all different however, as their opponents - Raquel Gonzalez (Spain) and Sofia Camila (Spain) -retired from the game that they were trailing 5-2 in the opening set.

The inspiring Doubles run serves as a perfect response for Okutoyi, whose run in the Singles category in the same tournament was halted in the Round of 16 by Vlada Mincheva who emerged the winner in a three set thriller.

The Auburn University student was a wild card in the event, and beat Bulgaria’s Julia Stamatova 6-2, 6-1 in the first round in the Singles.
