The top two sides in the two men's pools proceed to the semis set for Sunday
Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) men's side General Service Unit (GSU) find themselves at risk of missing top four of the ongoing pre-season tournament, Super Cup.
The paramilitary side, in pool B that has varsity sides Strathmore and Kenyatta (K.U), lost their opening match 28-15 against the former on Sunday to find themselves in a must-win situation ahead of their clash with K.U.
Under former Kenya national team skipper Victor Siero, and missing their playmaker Mark Barasa, GSU ball handling skills and composure were put to test. The first half of the encounter was a balanced affair, Strathmore holding a five-goal advantage going to the break.
"They (Strathmore) were the better team and they took full advantage of our own mistakes, especially the turnovers for an easy win.
Our coordination, blunt attacks and poor ball handling were our main undoing and we need to address said issues ahead of the next match," offered Siero.
On paper, the soldiers have the upper hand against K.U, seeing as they finished in fourth place at the conclusion of the regular league while K.U were sixth.
However, the Super Cup is a different ball game all together. GSU are also missing some key player with Phillip Eskei a doubt, having picked a neck injury in Sunday's match but in stable condition.
"I have been with the team for only two months and that is not enough time to study the players. However, I hope that next weekend we will have a better outing and make it to the last four," added the tactician.
As for the varsity side, skipper Samuel Katuva says they will be ready for GSU on the weekend. Having played for a 21-all draw against Strathmore, K.U have a point to their name and a win gives them a ticket to the semis.
