Organisers are looking to make it an annual event as more women rally enthusiasts are encouraged to participate.

As the Africa Rally Championship (ARC) Nanyuki rally edges closer, Maxine Wahome has set her targets on finishing in the top ten positions of the gruelling event.

Wahome, who was the top driver as the Lioness Rally Club hosted the first-ever women-only rally at Kasarani on Sunday, finishing first ahead of Natasha Tundo, says the race was good warm-up for the ARC set for Naivasha next month.

"We had a good, fun event, racing out there against the ladies. I got to be pushed by some very good drivers. This was a good build-up for the ARC which will be a different ball game but from the race at Kasarani, I believe I can push for a top ten finish against the men in Naivasha.

I got the chance to try a few things, test the car and I picked a few lessons. Every time I have an event I try to pick a few things that I can use for the next event and I believe the Kasarani rally has helped me change my braking. I have been braking very early and I changed that in the women's rally and it worked in my favour. I can now push it and brake just at the right time," offered Wahome.

The women-only rally had attracted ten crews with eight revving off after successfully going through scrutineering. Wahome clocked 17 minutes 16.1 seconds to finish just two seconds ahead of Tundo who clocked 17 minutes 19.0 seconds after four loops of the Kasarani rally track.

Caroline Gatimu and daughter Tinashe Gatimu finished third in 18 minutes 44.5 seconds.

Wahome, navigated by veteran co-driver Safina Khan completed the first loop in four minutes 23.9 seconds barely a second ahead of Tundo who clocked four minutes 24.1 seconds.

Tundo and co-driver Chantal Young were the fastest in the second loop, completing it in four minutes 17.5 seconds as Wahome placed second in four minutes 20.8 seconds.

The two went faster in the third loop with Wahome winning it while Tundo won the fourth loop, which was the fastest of the four, but could not beat Wahome when the tines were tallied. The Gatimus remained consistent, finishing third in all four loops.
