The event will see swimmers benefit from use of advanced technology and also win cash prizes
A total of 35 strong teams have confirmed their participation at this weekend's Kiambu Aquatics Level Two championships scheduled for Saturday, 4 to Sunday, 5 October at Potterhouse School, Runda.
The turnout, as per Competition Secretary Shadrack Mutiso, is evidence of the growing appetite for competitive swimming in Kenya, and the rising profile of the championship.
The event, whose registration deadline was Wednesday, 2 October, comes at the right time for swimmers prepping for the 10th Africa Aquatics Zone Three Championships slated for Thursday, 16 to Sunday, 19 October in Nairobi.
Though involving Level Two swimmers, the championship is expected to give the aforementioned participants a chance to sharpen their form against tough opposition before they carry the country’s flag at the continental event.
Among the swimmers hoping to benefit from the championships are Chris Mugo of Supermarlins Swimming Club, Jeff Muturi of Genesis Sports, and Leon Mwiti of Orca — all of whom have secured national call-ups for the Zone 3 meet.
“This season we are going fully automated with the Colorado System 7 Timing Device,” Mutiso said. “With such a large entry list and several Zone 3 championship swimmers competing, we expect a fast and highly competitive meet.”
The list of participating clubs will itself include seasoned giants in the pools, including: Braeburn, Torpedo, Orca, Mombasa Aquatics, Dashing Dolphins, Genesis, Woodcreek, Potterhouse, Crawford, Makini, ProSwim, AquaSharks, Snook, Umoja Sharks, Seahorses, Nova Pioneer, Premier, Juja St. Peter’s, Juja Prep and Senior School, and BeAPro.
Another exciting element about the event is that it will also be fueled by new incentives from Genesis Sports Limited, who have played a critical role in shaping the swimming season.
The sportswear giant has already injected a cash prize of Ksh100,000 for all swimmers, while the organisers aim to raise the prize pool to one million shillings before the season ends.
Also, in collaboration with U.S. partners, Kiambu Aquatics is planning for ten swimming coaches to travel to the United States next summer for a one-month exchange program, with their costs being fully covered.
While there, they will work with some of the best swimming clubs in America, gaining insights and experiences that will help elevate local coaching standards when they return.
