Prisons Kenya dethroned GSU in the local league last season, ending a six-year dominance by the paramilitary side

In his first full season as head coach at Prisons Kenya men’s volleyball team, coach Denis Mokua guided the side to the Africa club championships podium, a feat the warders had not achieved in 10 years.

Prisons Kenya came from a set down to beat Al Nasr of Libya in the third-place playoff of the continental championship that concluded earlier in the week for bronze. The feat has seen some of the players receive promotions from their employer.

With the feat, Mokua, who was full of praise for his squad, says they will build on that momentum as they look to defend the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) league title.

“This is proof that our systems are working and lifting the title last season was no fluke. We had trained well and the players got all the basics right with service our biggest weapon. I also have to acknowledge that the experience of players like Peter Kibata was instrumental as they provided the much-needed leadership on the court,” Mokua told Mozzart Sport.

With just one leg on the calendar before the KVF season enters the playoff stage, Mokua, a former player with the Warders who was part of the silver-winning squad of 2011, says his squad, as currently constituted has what it takes to lift the KVF title.

Asked what it would take for Kenyan clubs to lift the title, he pointed to exposure and proper structures.

“Our league, for instance, is a mix of outdoor and indoor matches which is not ideal. The lack of the best training and playing facilities is affecting our game as is the lack of exposure,” Mokua opined adding that a shift in the two would witness a growth spurt that would propel Kenya’s volleyball to the world stage across the divide.
