Newly retired Rodger Federer would like to play in doubles with his friend

Arguably the best tennis player of all time Rodger Federer recently announced his retirement from professional tennis. His decision, although expected, still caused a stir in the tennis world and his appearances are still very much covered in the media. As he arrived in London for his final ATP event, he told Swiss broadcaster RTS that he was "relieved" to have made the announcement, and "very happy to have been able to have the career I have had."

He told RTS that in recent months "my progress was not satisfactory, that my knee was not letting me go. Then I received a scan that was not great, and there was no more progress. I told myself that it was over. Honestly, I didn't want to do it anymore. I choked back a tear or two when announcing my retirement, but I was happy to have taken the step”.

Federer was asked what are his plans in the future, to which he replied that he doesn’t know just yet, but that he doesn’t want to completely distance himself from the sport that has given him everything. Also, since he is not able to compete as individual, due to his knee condition, Federer plans to play doubles, and revealed his dream would be to play with Rafael Nadal.

Maybe I can play doubles with Rafa, that would be an absolute dream". The Swiss and the Spaniard are friends and have played in a double before, at the 2017 Laver Cup. When Federer announced his retirement, one of the first to pay him tribute was Nadal.

"Dear Roger, my friend and rival, I wish this day would never have come. It's been a pleasure but also an honour and privilege to share all these years with you, living so many amazing moments on and off the court" Nadal wrote on Twitter.
