The championships will act as a qualifying round for April's Kampala Invitational tournament in Uganda

Nyeri High School is among six public schools that have added to the number of institutions expected to take part in the upcoming PIPSSA Inter County Sports Challenge scheduled for 3-4 February at St. Christopher's School in Nanyuki.

The schools - others including Bishop Gatimu Ngandu Girls, Karatina Girls, Moi Nyeri Complex Primary School, Nyandarua High, and Nanyuki High School, are all lined up to feature in the event’s swimming championships and join 13 other schools that had confirmed participation a fortnight ago.

The landmark event, set to play a significant role in fostering friendly competition, teamwork, talent development, and educational and sports benchmarking, is sponsored by the Private and International Preparatory Schools Sports Association (PIPSSA), and will be entering its fifth edition featuring a diverse range of sports including swimming, taekwondo, soccer, basketball, chess, and skating.

"We know public schools are facing tough times and paying entry fees for events like these is costly,” Event Organizing Secretary Damaris Muthoni told The Star in reaction to the new entries. “We have opted for a waiver to compete in the championship and we are also urging other schools from the region to enter the event.

“We expect a big turnout and by next week, the teams will be confirmed," she said.

The initiative, according to organizers, seeks to promote swimming in public schools and align with the emphasis on the sport in the newly established CBC curriculum.

Also among the reasons behind the championships will be to provide an opportunity for schools to not only participate, but highlight the role of sports in promoting tourism, wellbeing, regional integration, and peace.

The other schools that have already confirmed their participation include: Nyeri Good Shepherd, St. Christopher's School Nanyuki, Brickwoods, Potterhouse School, Chantilly, Riara, Mpesa Foundation Academy, Aga Khan, Oshwal Academy, Nyahururu Elite, Moi Educational, Lukenya, and Nova Pioneer Tatu City.

H. E Joshua Irungu, Governor of Laikipia is expected to inaugurate the games on the first day, with other leaders - George Wachiuri, CEO of Optiven Real Estate, along with other sponsors like Avenue Hospital, Equity Bank, Warwick Hotel - moving in with support.
