The team has opened their campaign with a four-match unbeaten run.

National team tactician, Peter Mwathi, has ditched Strathmore University handball club for newly-formed Equity handball Club, making their debut in the national men’s league this season.

As he leads a well-assembled side that is not short of talented players who have been in the league for several years, some under his tutelage at the varsity side, Mwathi has set a top-four finish target with the new outfit.

“I have been with a university team for long so this is a new challenge for me as well. I have built a formidable side and I am confident they will give the big boys a run for their money.

I know that the players are talented and have what it takes to compete against the best in the league but being a new side, we are using the first season to gel and build a working system before setting lofty targets for the coming season,” Mwathi said.

The tactician said that his first point of action after assembling the team has been building the players’ mentality to one of semi-pro athletes as most are just from school where the sport was not a priority.

He further adds that more emphasis has been put on the team’s strength and conditioning as that is a crucial part of the players’ transformation.

“We did not expect to face title contender like Black Mamba and of course Strathmore this early in the league but those two fixtures last weekend were a real test to what we have been doing so far and I can confidently say our training is working. We still have work to do but we are on the right track,” Mwathi added.

After a four-match unbeaten run, the bankers are fourth on the log behind leaders AND Super Cup champions Ulinzi HC and General Service Unit (GSU) who have played five matches and are separated by goal difference.

League winners National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB), who have played four, are third on the log with a superior goal difference to the bankers’. Engineers HC complete the top five places with four wins from seven matches.
