KBF leagues threw off last weekend at the Nyayo Indoor Arena.
Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) men's league losing finalists Ulinzi Warriors began their season on a winning note, seeing off Zetech Titans in a 71-51 outcome on the weekend.
That was Bernard Mufutu's first match at the helm of the team, having taken over from William Balozi who led the military side to the 2019 league title.
Mufutu takes over the team for the 2022 season with the tough task of reclaiming the title the soldiers lost to Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and by his own admission, it might take some time to get everything in the team in sync but they are taking it one match at a time.
"We had a good start but from that first match, I could tell that the team still needs some work. There are a few things we need to work on as we look to get better with each match.
The squad is focused and ready to play and that is a good place to start. We noted a few areas that need to be improved on but that is a gradual process as we get to where we want to be" said Mufutu.
The tactician steered clear of the issue of non-military players in the team but from the Titans' match, their players Victor Bosire, James Mwangi and Joseph Khaemba were conspicuously missing from the bench with unconfirmed reports saying the trio has been training with another top tier outfit at Nyayo.
Mufutu last season served as Balozi's assistant coach while also coaching the military's division one side KDF Morans who have since rebranded to Snipers, assisted by Esther Butali who is also assisting him at Warriors.
Despite the changes on the technical bench and the playing unit as a few players from the Snipers' side have since been promoted to the top tier side, the tactician believes once the squad gels nothing else will stop them.
