Wazalendo will open their campaign against Zamalek on Wednesday

Kenya’s Wazalendo Hockey Men’s Club are upbeat ahead of the Africa Cup for Clubs Championship which starts on Wednesday, November 24 and runs all the way to November 30 at the Theodosia Okoh Stadium in Accra, Ghana.

The team arrived in Accra, Ghana on Monday evening ahead of the competition and are set to undergo mandatory coronavirus tests before they have a feel of the field on Tuesday according to their head of delegation, James Were.

However, Were, who doubles as the Secretary-General, noted that there was no help from the government despite submitting their proposal in Ernest and even had to buy the country's flag which he believes should not be the case.

“The weather down here is more of the same back home. We will train tomorrow (Tuesday) and see how it goes. But generally, we are ready for the championship, but it’s sad that we never got any help from the government despite our early submission. Actually, we had to buy the country’s flag for the championship which should not be the case," Were is quoted by Nation.

Wazalendo are pooled in Group B alongside two Egyptian clubs, Zamalek and Tairat, and Ghana's Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and kick off their campaign on Wednesday morning against Zamalek.

They will then face off with Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) on Thursday before wrapping up their Group B action against Tairat on Saturday, November 27 and will be hoping for a top-two finish in the group to progress to the semis.

Butali, Blazers, and United States International University - Africa (USIU-A) pulled out due to lack of funds leaving only Wazalendo as the country's representatives in the competition.

Wazalendo traveling squad: Solomon Murila, Job Odhiambo, John Otora, Esbon Nyong’a, Dan Obonyo and Dennis Burudi, Griffin Amakule, Bonface Wemali, Cliff Omari,Joseph Ndegwa, Stanely Ndaiga, Mathew Momanyi, Sutcliffe Usagi, Brian Sasha, Danstone Wabwire, Joseph Kasua and Allan Munene.
