The Cliff Owuor-coached side needs to finish in the top three for a place in the continental competition set for Angola in August 2025
National men's basketball team, Kenya Morans, have complicated their path to the 2025 AfroBasket after forfeiting their opening match in the final qualifying window against Tunisia.
The side was set to play the AfroBasket defending champions on Friday 21 February in the opening match of Group E in Tripoli, Libya but had not left the country on match-day for the three-day competition.
"Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) regrets to report that due to unforeseen logistical challenges, which included lack of connecting flights into Tripoli, Kenya Morans Basketball Team is unable to arrive in time for the opening match at the ongoing FIBA Afrobasket Championship in Tripoli, Libya
As a result, Kenya will be forced to forfeit the match against Tunisia that is scheduled for this afternoon. While this setback is regrettable, Kenya Morans remain focused on the competition ahead.
Kenya's chances remain positive as the players are determined to give the best performance in the upcoming fixtures against Angola and Guinea," a statement from the national federation, send on Friday morning, reads in part.
Stakeholders have taken to social media to call the federation and Ministry of Sports out for the predicament that the team finds itself in despite a provisional squad having been released oon 10 January.
Kenya find themselves last in Group E on four points, one less than Guinea who stunned record champions Angola 66-65 on Friday in the other match up of the day, to pick their first maximum points.
With the walkover denying Kenya a crucial point, the path to qualification just got more complicated for Morans who will need wins in the remaining two matches while hoping Guinea drop points too against Tunisia to get a chance.
