
Kaloki siblings rule at Kenya National Junior Chess Championships

The Kaloki siblings, Hawi and Zuri were the winners of the Kenya National Junior Championships in Nairobi.
The two will now represent the country at the Africa Junior Chess Championships to be held in Cairo, Egypt from Friday 15 to Sunday 24 November.
Before that, the two siblings will take part in the World Youth Chess Championships which starts in Brazil on Monday 28 October until Sunday 10 November.
Hawi, 17, collected a maximum of six points to emerge as the National Junior Champion while his sister also had a perfect score of six points.
Chess Kenya President Bernard Wanjala praised the two siblings for their exceptional performance.
“Their continued dominance is a testament to their dedication, skill, and passion for the game, and we look forward to watching their progress on the international stage,” he said.
Bradley Wathimba came from semi-retirement to emerge second in the Open section after he collected 5.5 points.
Wathimba a student at Makini School has been missing in action since June when he took part in the Africa Youth Chess Championships in South Africa as he was busy preparing for national examinations.
Aguda Lwanga, Jamie Kanango, Daniel Baraka Simiyu and Alex Muysoki all finished in third place with five points each.
In the ladies' section, Ibrahim Zena, Shukri Shakira, Maashao Genavive and Ivy Nyambura finished in tied second position after collecting 4.5 points.
The two-day tournament attracted an impressive turnout, with 79 players competing in the Open Section and 37 in the Girls’ Section, each having earned their place by excelling in previous Kenya National Youth Chess
Championship 2024 and Kenya National School Chess Championships 2024.
Entry was extended to players who had achieved a minimum of 6/8 points in the National Youth Championships or 7/9 points in the National School Championships, ensuring a high calibre of play.
