They hope in Philadelphia that he didn't finish the season, but the MVP title will, by all accounts, go to someone else this season

Philadelphia 76ers will have to manage without Joel Embiid for the remainder of the season, as the reigning NBA MVP had knee surgery today. A meniscus injury forced the Cameroonian off the court when he was dominating the championship, recently scoring as many as 70 points in a game against San Antonio at the end of January.

As Philadelphia announced in a short statement, Embiid had knee surgery today, and the control and prognosis of how long he will have to be off the court will follow in four weeks.

According to the American media, the Sixers hope that the season is not over for Embiid and that he will return to the court to help the team, at least in the playoffs.

The team does poorly when there is no first star on the court: Embiid has missed 14 games this season, and Philadelphia's record in those matches is 4-10. Since the match with Denver on January 27, the Cameroonian has appeared on the court only against Golden State, when he suffered the injury that lead to the surgery, when Jonathan Kuminga fell on his leg. Since the meeting with the Nuggets, the Sixers have won only one of six games.

This injury practically destroyed the chances of Embiid defending the MVP title since it is necessary to appear in at least 65 games in the regular part of the season. And, he has already missed 14 of the Sixers' 49 games. If he misses 18 or more, he is definitely out of the competition.
