Eight Kenyan boxing officials have graduated from national to 1-Star referees and judges after successfully completing their International Boxing Association (IBA) course in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania last month.
The eight, who were among the 36 participants from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Namibia, received their examination results this week on Tuesday 17 September through a letter communicated to Anthony Ombok, the President of the Boxing Association of Kenya.
The officials now with a new distinction include Nelson Otieno, Ibrahim Ahmed Ibrahim, Hellen Wanjiku, Edward Mwaura, Lela Idi Said, Stephen Mathu, Joseph Onyango, and Samuel Obiero.
The development, in addition to the efforts made by the Kenyan federation, shows a renewed commitment towards upskilling the level of officiating in the Kenyan amateur boxing scene.
Boxing Federation of Kenya’s Communications Director Duncan Kuria said: “It is really pleasing to see our judges achieve success and one-star recognition.
“In doing so, they have taken a step towards developing their skills and enhancing their expertise, which aligns with the needs of our game.”
The course, which included the theoretical and practical components of the game, was conducted by Sadie Martina Duffy from the Republic of Ireland, and Godavarisingh Rajcoomar from Mauritius, who is also Chairperson of the African Boxing Confederation (AFBC) Referees and Judges Committee.
