Tennis ace Okutoyi gets 3 year membership deal from Karen Country Club

The award of membership is in recognition of the achievements both girls have made in the sport not just locally but in Africa and the rest of the world.

Kenya’s tennis poster girl Angella Okutoyi has been handed a massive boost in her plans of turning fully professional as she landed a 3 year membership deal from Karen Country Club alongside her twin sister Roselida Asumwa.

The three-year membership grants both girls full access to all the facilities at the Karen Country club including but not limited to tennis courts, the gymnasium, swimming pool and the walking range.

The award of membership is in recognition of the achievements both girls have made in the sport not just locally but in Africa and the rest of the world.

“Karen Country Club is pleased to announce the award of a three (3) year club membership to Angela Okutoyi and her sister Roselinda Asumwa. The membership grants both girls’ full access to all the facilities at the Karen Country club including but not limited to tennis courts, the gymnasium, swimming pool and walking range,” General Manager Bob Onyango said.

In July 2022, Okutoyi made history as she lifted the Junior Wimbledon Girls’ Doubles trophy to become the first ever Kenyan to win a Grand Slam title.

As she prepares to play her final Junior Grand Slam tournament at the US Open scheduled to take place from 4-10 September, the Kenyan number one expressed her delight at getting access to the club which will help in her development towards the next phase.

“It feels good and it is a really good opportunity for us both because now at least we can be able to access into a members club which makes it easy to use other facilities like the gym as well.

I will also be able to spend more time on the tennis court compared to Nairobi club. In the level I am going to, I need to be strong physically so I need to work a lot in the gym so this is helpful,” Okutoyi said.

Okutoyi is Kenya’s number 1 ranked tennis player and the first Kenyan to win a Glam SlamTitle. Winner, she won the Wimbledon Juniors Girls’ Doubles, 2022, Kenya Open Champion (Seniors), 2018 (youngest winner), Africa Junior Champion (2018, 2021), Reached the 3rd round of the Australian Open Juniors and 2nd round of Roland Garros (2022). She achieved a Career-high International Junior Ranking: 53 (January 2022).

Asumwa, her twin sister, is ranked 4th nationally. She is a regular quarter-finalist, semi-finalist and finalist in regional and African junior tournaments – U12 through to U18. She achieved a career high Junior Ranking: 1149 (January 2021) and Kenya ranking: #4 (Juniors and Seniors). She has represented Kenya in Fed Cup/ Billie Jean King Cup and CAN
