Wirtz shines against Freiburg for the first place in Bundesliga

Reading Time: 4min | Sun. 29.10.23. | 22:06

Bayer Leverkusen won at home 2-1 and surpassed Bayern Munich

A whole decade passed, and no one managed to remove Bayern Munich from the German throne. When Borussia Dortmund failed to do so last May on the last day of the season against Mainz, many thought that this was the biggest chance that had gone away and that many years would pass before someone else had such a good chance to take Bayern off the throne. But maybe that future will come sooner than expected. Maybe, just maybe...

It is still too early to talk about the title at all, but right now, it is very nice to dream if you are a fan or football player of Bayer Leverkusen or coach Xabi Alonso. Bayer continues to build the road to the crown that has been waiting since the foundation of the club; that is, it will be exactly 120 years until next summer! Fifth consecutive victory, this time against Freiburg, and a nice team of the young Spanish tactician returned to the top of the Bundesliga with two points more than Bayern, who does not want to give the crown to anyone, but that will inevitably happen once. Whether this season - we'll see. Bayer Leverkusen - Freiburg 2:1 (1:0).

Today's victory was inspired by Florian Wirtz. Bayer's ‘pearl’ participated in both goals. First, when he single-handedly dribbled past the entire Freiburg defence with 13 touches of the ball before hitting the far corner of the goal in the 36th minute, and secondly, when he again ran and dribbled the opposing players, only to be lucky that the ball ended at Jonas Hoffmann who hit the target mostly thanks to the goalkeeper of Freiburg. Noah Atubolu is the one who scored the goal.

This was definitely Florio Wirtz's week. First, as a substitute, he initiated the action for the winning goal against Wolfsburg, then in the Europa League, he honoured Qarabag with a goal and three assists, and today he did practically everything himself. When we talk about the whole action of Wirz's first goal, even the former football master Xabi Alonso was delighted at the touchline when he saw the young hope of German and European football in action.

After Qarabag, Alonso spoke in superlative terms about his young protégé.

"I see that Flo is becoming a more mature footballer over time. He is a player who can make a difference. Everything he does is natural, it's not taught, you're born with it and not everyone can do it".

Bayer could have had a bigger advantage, but the ball didn't go into the goal. The chances were few and far between, and the host completely dominated the situation as the first part of the game ended with more than 75 per cent of the possession! Instead, Freiburg finally broke an away goal drought that has been going on since mid-August. Manuel Gulde managed to enter the scorers' list in the 70th minute and thus spice up the remaining twenty minutes of the game, but even after that, Bayer remained in absolute control and did not allow a shocking outcome to happen. For Leverkusen, 27 goals in the first nine games of the Bundesliga is a new club record. After the opening 0:0 against Bayern, Bayer scored an average of three goals!
