Sporting CP starlet Geny Catamo is wanted at Villa Park

Aston Villa is showing a keen interest in Geny Catamo, a Sporting CP winger who has also drawn the attention of several Premier League clubs. The 22-year-old has made appearances in all eight of Sporting's Primeira Liga matches this season, with Sporting leading the Portuguese top-flight with seven wins.

Catamo, a left-footed Mozambique international, has made significant contributions with three goals in all competitions after earning a spot in Sporting's first team. He joined Sporting in 2019, previously playing for Amora's 'B' team for three years. In 2021, he was promoted to the senior squad but went on successive loan spells to Vitoria Sport Clube and Maritimo. Now, with a chance to impress this season, Catamo has garnered interest from various clubs, including Aston Villa and Fulham.

Despite a strong start to the Premier League season, Aston Villa appears to be considering reinforcements in the attacking department for the upcoming January transfer window. Injuries to key players like Alex Moreno, Jacob Ramsey, Emi Buendia, and Tyrone Mings have affected the squad. As a result, Aston Villa is actively exploring options to strengthen their team, with Geny Catamo being one of the players they are considering.

Catamo has garnered significant interest and could potentially leave Sporting as early as January. He still has two years remaining on his current contract with the club. Catamo is a winger with a distinctive style of cutting inside onto his favored left foot, which sets him apart, especially as a wing-back. In Unai Emery's tactical system, particularly against stronger opponents when defensive solidity is crucial, His ability to adapt could contribute to a back-five formation.

The potential transfer fee required to secure Catamo's services is currently uncertain, but considering Aston Villa's search for attacking options and the need for right-back cover, he could be a suitable candidate for the club. Aston Villa's owners, V Sports, have recently made investments in Portuguese football by acquiring a stake in Vitoria, where Catamo spent the second half of the 2021/22 season on loan. As both clubs qualified for the Europa Conference League this season, V Sports reduced its stake in the Portuguese club to 29 percent and no longer has representation on the board of directors.

Aston Villa has enjoyed a strong start to the season, winning six of their first nine league games and currently occupying fifth place, just four points behind the league leaders.
