Athletic Club's trusty forward broke La Liga record in consecutive matches played
Can you eat 203 healthy meals in a row? Can you attend 203 classes in a row without skipping a single one? Hey, we've met people who cannot even count to 203 without dropping a number or two. It's hard. It's a big number. And yet, Athletic Club forward Inaki Williams has played 203 consecutive La Liga games for his team, setting the competition's record.
His start against Deportivo Alaves on Friday night made it an incredible 203 straight games. Williams’ long-standing streak started on 20 April 2016 against Atletico Madrid. He has not missed any of Athletic’s LaLiga fixtures since four games in the 2015/16 season plus all 38 league matches in every season from 2016/17 until 2020/21. That's five full seasons! The striker has been involved in all eight of his team's league matches so far this season, taking his tally to the magic number of 203.
Iñaki Williams has now played 203 consecutive games in LaLiga, setting a new competition record for most matches played in a row.

The fact that Inaki Williams, a player of African origin has ever played for Athletic Club is a small miracle, to begin with. The club from the Basque Country, a small area within Spain, only fields local players. So, only Basques. But Inaki, whose Ghanaian parents moved their young family to the town of Pamplona in the Basque Country, has long since become one of the local boys. He's an important string in the fabric of this unusual club.
He was the first black man to play for the club. But he is no longer the only one – his younger brother Nico has also made the first team. Tonight, we should all take a moment to admire the remarkable achievement of the 27-year-old record-breaker.
Inaki's teammates made sure this special occasion was marked with a victory, as Raul Garcia scored just before the break to secure a narrow, but deserved win for the red and whites. The former Atletico Madrid forward was relieved to find the back of the net after he's previously missed a penalty kick.
