Gaspo decided to end their season prematurely in protest

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has now scheduled an exhibition match between FKF Women Division One League side Kibera Soccer Ladies and Women Premier League ladies’ side Vihiga Queens on Saturday afternoon at the Police Sacco Grounds.

This is after Gaspo, the league runners-up, announced that they would not honour their final league match against Queens, which would have also served as a crowning moment for the now four-time league winners. Vihiga will be crowned after the match against the second-tier Zone A league leaders.

Edward Githua Gaspo’s team manager disclosed in an interview with Mozzart Sport that they had formally written to the federation informing them of their decision to boycott the match. Sources indicate the team was aggrieved by the fact that they would not be getting any monetary reward for finishing second in the log.

"We decided to inform the federation and the opponent well ahead of time, and they have a letter detailing our reasons. If they had anything planned for Vihiga Queens’ coronation during the match, we had no such information, and if anything, they had enough notice to change their plans," he stated.

Vihiga will reportedly get Kes. 300,000 as prize money for bagging the league. Last season, they were awarded KES 1 million by the FKF Caretaker Committee for winning the league before the season was nullified by the federation when they resumed office in November.

Getting funding for women's leagues has proved to be a difficult task for the federation. The clubs are also struggling, with the majority of them struggling to not only pay their players but also take care of their logistical obligations.
