The Royals were struggling against Deportivo Alaves, with ten men after Nacho's red card, but managed to clinch a victory in the stoppage-time

Real Madrid have returned to first place in La Liga, joint though, with a critical 1-0 away win at Deportivo Alaves thanks to Lucas Vazquez's stoppage-time winner.

Ten-men Madrid capitalise on Girona dropping points at Real Betis to get back to the summit despite the fact they played most of the second half without Nacho Fernandez, who was sent off due to a reckless tackle.

However, Real Madrid tried to push on for a winner, and they managed to find one in the game's dying stages. Toni Kroos' corner was met by an unmarked Vazquez, who headed home to ensure victory.

It means that Real Madrid will end 2023 in top spot, level on points with Girona by ahead on goal difference. They are also seven clear of Barcelona, who occupy third in La Liga table. However, that could be Atletico Madrid's position if they defeat Sevilla on Saturday.
