Tributes pour in for late Fortune Sacco head coach Sylvester Odero

The Kenyan football community is in mourning following the tragic and untimely death of Fortune Sacco FC head coach Sylvester Odero, who passed away in a fatal road accident early Monday morning.

The devastating news was confirmed by the club’s management and has sent shockwaves across the National Super League (NSL), where Odero was quickly rising as one of the game’s most respected and promising tacticians.

Odero had only signed with Fortune on Monday, 14 April 2025, but in just under three months, he made an indelible impact.

Under his guidance, Fortune climbed to a commendable fifth-place finish in the NSL with 58 points.

His sudden death comes at a time when he was already laying the foundation for the new season, one he had confidently predicted would see Fortune push even higher up the table.

A holder of the CAF B coaching license, Odero’s journey through Kenyan football was marked by dedication to player development and grassroots growth.

He previously led Kirinyaga All Stars, guiding them to two appearances in the Mozzart Bet Cup and a strong run to the Division Two play-offs against Kabati Youth.

He also served as a match analyst for Murang’a Seal and had been involved with the Kenya Academy of Sports (KAS), working with the national U-17 girls’ team.

Since the heartbreaking news broke, tributes have poured in from clubs, players, journalists, and fans, painting a picture of a man whose influence went well beyond the touchline.

We are saddened to learn of the passing of Fortune Sacco Head Coach Sylvester Odero. Mr Odero was a charismatic leader and one of the best coaches in this country, having guided Fortune to the top five of the NSL log.

FKF were also not left behind in sending condolences.

"We mourn the passing of Sylvester Odero, FKF Kirinyaga Vice Chair & Fortune Sacco Head Coach. He was a dedicated servant of the game who contributed immensely to football in Kirinyaga and beyond.
