Tragedy in Brazil: Alisson’s father is dead by drowning

Father of Liverpool’s goalkeeper dies at the age of 57 after drowning in a lake

A personal tragedy rocked one of the world’s best goalkeepers. Alisson Becker’s father Jose died on Wednesday after drowning in a lake near his holiday home in southern Brazil. He was 57 years old.

Jose Becker went missing after was swimming at a dam on his property near the town of Rincao do Inferno in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. He was reported to have gone missing on Wednesday afternoon. The Fire Department of Cacapava do Sul were called to the scene before news emerged out of the region later that evening that the body had been located around midnight in the city of Bage.

Various reports across Brazil emerged in the early hours of Thursday morning before the tragic news was confirmed by both Fluminense and Sao Paulo's official Twitter accounts. Tributes and expressions of condolence have been pouring in all day as Liverpool’s number one tries to come to terms with the awful news.

"With much regret, Sao Paulo FC receives the sad news of the death of Jose Agostinho Becker, father of goalkeepers Alisson and Muriel. Our condolences and solidarity with the two athletes and their families. A lot of strength and a lot of light at this point."

The club who Alisson and his brother Muriel started their professional careers with, Internacional, also offered their condolences.

"It is with great sadness that we received the news of Jose Agostinho Becker's death, the father of our ex-goalkeepers Alisson and Muriel. We wish strength to family and friends in this moment of so much pain."

Alisson won the Yachine Trophy, as the best goalkeeper of 2019. Upon receiving the award at The Best FIFA Football Awards gala in December 2019, he spoke about how much his family means to him.

“I thank my family and my wife, who supports me wherever I go. Also, my parents, who are in Brazil, and I think they are watching me, and God. I feel blessed and grateful for what He did in my life and in my family life.”
