The Saudis won't be held to ransom: Bye Guehi, Newcastle turn to Gomez
Reading Time: 2min | Mon. 19.08.24. | 17:22
The Magpies got tired of haggling with Crystal Palace over Marc Guehi and turned to another England international, this time from Liverpool's ranks - Joe Gomez
Newcastle were very keen on bringing in Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace. However, the demands of the London club were too high for the Magpies, who ultimately decided to turn to other alternatives and stop playing the "haggling game" with Palace representatives.

The Magpies' second option is another England international - Liverpool's Joe Gomez. The 27-year-old is reportedly not satisfied with his status at the club, and the match the Reds played against Ipswich in the first Premier League round just fueled those rumours. Namely, captain Virgil van Dijk and youngster Jarell Quansah were starters at centre-back positions, while Ibrahima Konate replaced the 21-year-old after the break. At the same time, Gomez wasn't even on the bench.
It is believed the Reds would let the defender leave for around 40 million euros, while Crystal Palace demanded almost twice as much for Guehi. Subsequently, Eddie Howe's squad desperately needs an addition to the defensive line, especially since Fabian Schar was sent off against Southampton and will miss three matches. Apart from the Swiss, there are also the convalescent Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles, and Dan Burn, who mainly covered the left-back position during the previous season. Hence, defensive reinforcement is essential, but time doesn't work for Newcastle.
Gomez joined Liverpool in 2015 from his boyhood club, Charlton Athletic. In nine years at Anfield, he made 224 appearances and scored no goals. If the two Premier League sides and the player reach the agreement, Newcastle would be the third club in Gomez's career.
