Spurs' EFL Cup tragedy turns into victory on the wings of Ange's subs

Reading Time: 2min | Thu. 19.09.24. | 10:25

Tottenham were on the verge of a shocking exit against Coventry before Djed Spence scored a late equalizer. Brennan Johnson added another in the stoppage time for a win

It's impossible to tell, but there's a good chance Ange Postecouglou would be saying his farewell to Tottenham Hotspur this Thursday if Spurs had lost to second-tier Coventry City in the EFL Cup last night. And they were so close to falling into the abyss, trailing 1-0 with just a few minutes left.

The home fans were desperate in the end. Until the 88th minute, they were just a step or two away from a massive upset. They dominated the game, and Tottenham were struggling. All they needed was that second goal to secure victory.

Ephron Mason-Clark missed two clear-cut chances from counter-attacks, and the punishment was brutal and instant.

Djed Spence was the first sub that Postecoglou made in the second half. It was he who started the action, rushed to the opposite box and was rewarded with the equalizer. From that moment on, it was a totally different ball game.

Spurs managed not just to turn things around, but to finish everything before extra time. Brennan Johnson came on in the first half due to Wilson Odobert's injury. Tottenham pressed Coventry in the middle, the hosts lost the ball, and Rodrigo Betancourt sent it perfectly between the lines. Johnson's finisingh in that one-on-one situation was excellent and that was just enough for a 2-1 win.

Ange survived.
