The home nation(s) will be revealed during May's 74th FIFA Congress next year

As the much awaited final of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup edges closer this weekend, so is the anxious wait for the announcement of the chosen host for the next tournament, and one set to take place during the 74th FIFA Congress May next year.

Top of the list of candidates is a nation that could make history by becoming the first African nation to host this prestigious global tournament - South Africa.

Branded as the ‘most fiercely contested bidding process ever’, the 2027 World Cup is set to offer a special feel, especially with women's football rapidly rising in popularity worldwide every day.

Four bids representing the same number of confederations remain in the race to host the 2027 edition of FIFA’s women’s showpiece tournament.

The interested parties thus far include; a joint bid between The Royal Belgian Football Association, the Royal Netherlands Football Association and the German Football Association, The Brazilian Football Association, The South African Football Association, and another joint expression of interest featuring The U.S. Soccer Federation and the Mexican Football Association.

But it is South Africa - The Rainbow Nation- that has an excellent chance to bring the Women's World Cup to Africa for the first time ever.

South Africa formally submitted its bid back in May 2023, as required by FIFA regulations.

The final bids must be presented to FIFA by December 2023, followed by inspection visits in early 2024.

The 2027 hosts will then be revealed during May's 74th FIFA Congress next year.

Bringing the Women's World Cup to Africa would provide an enormous boost for the development of women's football across the continent and with world-class stadiums and infrastructure already in place from the 2010 men's World Cup, South Africa presents a compelling case to finally host World Cup football.

The 2027 tournament will be the 10th edition of the global showpiece event, which occurs every four years.

In this year’s edition being hosted by Australia and New Zealand, the Banyana Banyana advanced to the knockout rounds (Last 16), where they were beaten 2-0 by Netherlands, but enjoyed a big win over Italy (3-2) in the last group stage game on 2 August.
