Sofapaka head coach Ken Odhiambo has explained releasing eight players at the club in the January transfer window.
The 2009 Premier League champions Sofapaka has been a beehive of transfer activities in the mid-season window, releasing eight players with coach Ken Odhiambo citing a change in philosophy at the club.
Sofapaka parted ways with Nigerian strikers, Michael Karamor and Promise Chinoso, Ghanaian midfielder, Jedinak Nana and Kenyan contingent of Faina Jacobs, Bryson Juma, David Simiyu, Isaiah Wakasala, and Collins Wakhungu.
Odhiambo noted that he shares a different philosophy to former coach John Baraza and had clear some deadwood in the squad when asked about releasing the eight players.
“Every coach has his own philosophy and my philosophy was different the former coach, I can say that the players we have now recruited are of quality and we are looking at the future of the team by signing young players,”
“We have a good squad, we recently signed a keeper from CHAN, two Burundians, Timothy Otieno and Waithera who we believe will bring some change,” said Odhiambo.
Batato ba Mungu have been underwhelming following their spending spree before the start of the season as they roped in Lawrence Juma from Gor Mahia, Michael Kibwage from KCB and Mathare United’s Roy Okal.
Sofapaka sit ninth on the log with Odhiambo steadying the ship since John Baraza was shown the door following a poor start to the campaign.
Odhiambo heaped praise on Timothy Otieno following his arrival from Zambian side Napsa Stars and has hit the ground running scoring in the FKF Cup against Kitale All-Stars.
“Timothy Otieno is a player who has the experience and left the country for Zambia as the top scorer so he knows the league well, has intelligent runs and composure in front of goal."
"If you look at the game against Zoo, he was really instrumental in the goals we scored and is a really good addition to the squad,” added Odhiambo.
Sofapaka will be boosted by the return of Lawrence Juma for their league clash against Ulinzi Stars on Friday 19 February but will miss the services of Kepha Aswani who is ill.
