The Owls beat Derby County 4-2 in the first EFL Championship game of 2025, mostly thanks to two breathtaking second-half goals

If we should predict the entire new year based on one of the first games of January 1, then we're about to enjoy a spectacular 2025.

We witnessed a true spectacle at mythical Hillsborough as Sheffield Wednesday topped Derby County 4-2 in the 25th round of the EFL Championship.

The two former Premier League sides gave us a highly entertaining clash, embellished with two out-of-this-world screamers. Both were scored by the hosts in the second half.

Josh Windass made it 2-0 from a few yards behind halfway line, making an early (so early!) bid for the Puskas Award, for the most beautiful goal of the year.

What followed just two minutes later was also nothing short of a jaw-dropping moment.

Young French player of African origins, Djeidi Gassama, made a sensational first touch on his own half to launch himself in a wonderful run towards Derby's keeper before finishing it smoothly into the far low corner.

Let's just hope the rest of this year will be equally classy.
