Former United's player and manager failed to qualify for Europe and was sacked this morning
Last year they played in the Europa League but fell short after the group stage. This season they aimed for the same company, only to be stopped by Shakhtar with two convincing wins, which forced them to switch to the Conference League qualifiers. Even there, Besiktaş failed to impress: after scraping past Irish side St. Patrick’s, they stumbled in the tie against Lausanne, which means there will be no European football for them until next summer. That realization pushed the Istanbul club’s management to take radical action. On the very night of their elimination by the Swiss side, the Black-and-Whites dismissed Ole Gunnar Solskjær from his position as head coach. Swift and decisive. The contract was terminated, after which the Turkish giant began the search for a new solution on the bench.

The Norwegian did not succeed. He had arrived in January to replace Giovanni van Bronckhorst, whose project collapsed after only 20 matches and an early Europa League exit. At the start of his tenure, the former Manchester United star and coach gave the impression he could energize the Bosphorus club. At one point he even went on a winning streak, managing to beat both Galatasaray and Fenerbahce in city derbies.
Europe was his downfall. Last week in Switzerland, Besiktas led until seven minutes from the end but failed to win (1–1). In the return leg, they squandered the advantage of a packed stadium and, with a 0–1 defeat to Lausanne, saw their European journey come to an end. And all this after the arrivals of several well-known players such as Tammy Abraham, Tiago Djalo, Wilfred Ndidi, El Bilal Toure, Orkun Kokcu, and David Jurasek...
