Ronaldo's 'massively high standards' were a problem in Manchester

Former United's coach revealed the possible reasons for Cristiano's infamous departure

After Saudi Arabia's hunt for European talents this July and August, it looks like Cristiano Ronaldo's second transfer to Manchester United in 2021 happened a long time ago. But it was less than a year since the Portugal international infamously ended his tenure with the Red Devils. In November 2022 he left Old Trafford, in December he was the first of many to sign for Saudi club Al-Nassr. There were a lot of reasons why his second spell in Manchester ended with a bitter note from both parties. The player claimed he felt betrayed and unwanted by some executives in the club. Reports from Old Trafford spoke of his unwillingness to obey to the tactics of both Ralf Rangnik and Erik ten Hag. He was always angry if he was substituted or on the bench, he was selfish during the games (as always)…

But former United trainer gave another interesting version of his failure at the club. His former coach Mike Phelan spoke about Ronaldo in his interview with Sky Sports.

The second time round, he came in a lot older and a lot more opinionated, strong-willed. He still had massively high standards and was terrific to work with. But I'd probably say a tougher mindset. He had been at Man United, he had been Portugal's ever-present, he had been at Madrid. I liked it because he didn't want his standards to drop, he wanted other people's standards to come up. And sometimes you lose a few people along the way when that happens. I remember certain times when he pushed and pushed hard, and he didn't get much reaction or much response. And there was frustration“ explained Phelan.

The iconic coach also gave an interesting observation about Ronaldo and his expectations, which are probably similar to all great football players.

When you deal with top, top people, it's about them and where they can finish and where they can get to. They want to look back and go "wow, that was successful". And he probably realised, and I don't know as I never had that conversation with him, that he couldn't do it at Manchester United. So his challenges were elsewhere“ gave Phelan his version of events.
