Reports: Tanzanian club parts ways with coach Robert Matano

Matano joined the club in January 2025 on a six-month contract, but just three months in, he has parted ways with the team.
Tanzania's top club, Fountain Gate, has reportedly parted ways with coach Robert Matano just three months into his tenure. The experienced coach joined the club on January 10th after leaving Sofapaka FC.
However, his time at Fountain Gate has been challenging, and his stint has now come to an unexpected end.
"Fountain Gate FC has parted ways with their coach, Robert Matano, from Kenya, following a fallout with the players and the team’s management.
As of now, the team is under the tutelage of former Mwadui coach Khalid Adam ‘Kibonge,’ who will be assisted by Amri Said,” reads a post by Tanzanian sports outlet, Mstadi Sports on X (formerly Twitter).
The former Tusker FC tactician has not had the career he would have wished for in Tanzania, where he managed just two wins in the eight league games he was in charge.
The last straw came on Wednesday, April 2, when Matano’s Fountain Gate were hammered 3-0 at home by Singida Black Stars, coached by Kenyan tactician David Ouma.
Fountain Gate’s management seemed to have had enough of the coach, nicknamed "The Lion," and decided to part ways with him. Matano was absent for the team's 3-0 loss to Mashujaa in a league match played on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at the Lake Tanganyika Stadium in Kigoma.
Matano's time at Fountain Gate was marred by controversy. Notably, the former Nairobi City Stars coach came under fire when he admitted to being a long-time Simba SC fan ahead of his first league match against the Tanzanian giants on February 6, 2025, which ended in a draw.
Fountain Gate was the first team Matano coached outside of Kenya in his over two-decade-long stellar coaching career, which has seen him lift three FKF Premier League titles, with a fourth one nullified by the courts.
Currently, Fountain Gate is eighth on the league table with 28 points, a significant 31 points behind leaders Yanga FC and just four points above 13th-placed Namungo FC, who are in the relegation zone.
