Reds kill two birds with one stone: Bench Mr Flop and save money

Reading Time: 2min | Wed. 23.04.25. | 17:19

Should the forward reach 50 starts in Liverpool's jersey, the EPL side would have to pay an additional €5 million to Benfica. He's currently on 49 starts and has been in the XI only four times this year (last time 46 days ago)

Having the best of both worlds is usually the best thing one can achieve. Apart from (almost) dominantly winning the Premier League, Liverpool have managed to accomplish the aforementioned in the case of Darwin Nunez. Or better said, the Reds have managed to kill two birds with one stone.

Namely, according to their deal with Benfica, once the Uruguayan reaches 50 starts with the EPL side, the Portuguese team would receive an additional bonus of €5 million. However, at this point, Liverpool seem to have played it cleverly, as the Eagles will hardly see that money.

Despite joining the Anfield crew almost three years ago, Nunez has yet to reach the magical number of 50, as he is currently on 49. Nevertheless (intentionally or not) Arne Slot included the striker in the XI only four times since the beginning of 2025 - in the FA Cup clash against the minnows Accrington, UCL duel with Lille, EFL Cup semi-finals versus Tottenham, and the EPL match against Southampton.

Moreover, Nunez hasn't started a game for 46 days and the question is whether he's even deserved it. In 138 appearances with the Reds, he scored only 40 goals, although he arrived carrying a status of a ruthless net-buster. This season, he found the net seven times in 42 games. Too subpar for Liverpool's standards.

In the end, it would be no wonder if the 25-year-old didn't reach 50 starts by the end of the season. And if the Reds sell him during the June Transfer Window, Benfica might feel robbed. Or is it just good business?
