Despite receiving a lavish extension offer from Bayern, the defender is still hesitating to accept it, which has forced the club to take drastic measure
Greed is a sin. However, Dayot Upamecano doesn't seem to know that, or at least doesn't care. If he did, he'd accept the extravagant extension offer he received from his club, Bayern Munich.
Namely, the Bavarians are very keen on keeping the Frenchman, and their proposal indeed proves it: a four-year deal worth €20 million per season, a signature bonus of €20 million, a €65 million release clause, and a place in the top five highest-paid Bayern players alongside Harry Kane, Manuel Neuer, Jamal Musiala, and Joshua Kimmich.
But still, it's apparently not enough. The problem, allegedly, is that the clause would come into effect in July 2028, while the player and his agent demand an earlier implementation by one year.
Now, the delay-and-hesitation game might work with some other club, but Bayern are one of the world's football giants and a serious side, so something like that would never be allowed. Hence, according to BILD, the Bavarians gave Upamecano an ultimatum: make up your mind within the next two weeks, or the deal is off!
Bayern have set a deadline for Dayot Upamecano. The Frenchman must decide by mid-February whether to accept or reject Bayern's contract offer. The offer will definitely not be improved. Now, it's all up to the 27-year-old. He is satisfied in Munich, and Vincent Kompany sees him as one of the crucial defensive pillars, but no player is bigger than the club. Bayern will get by without Upamecano, and he'll be the only one to lose if the extension falls through. It may be the biggest mistake of his career.
