Benni McCarthy kicked off his reign as Kenya’s head coach with a dramatic 3-3 draw against The Gambia on Thursday evening at the Alassane Ouattara Ebimpé Olympic Stadium in Ivory Coast.
The result keeps Kenya fourth in World Cup qualifying Group F with six points, while The Gambia remains fifth with five points.
Mozzart Sport closely followed the action and here are our player ratings for Harambee Stars

Ian OtienoGoalkeeper
After a long absence from the national team, his nerves were evident from the start. He looked shaky, struggled with distribution, and his positioning from the backline was unconvincing. Conceding a goal at the near post—something unexpected from a goalkeeper of his caliber—added to his struggles.
However, he redeemed himself with brilliant moments, including a crucial penalty save against Musa Barrow and another impressive stop later in the game. Despite these highlights, conceding three goals ultimately lowered his overall rating.
Rating
5

Erick OtienoMidfield
Erick delivered an overall average performance. He showed strength in one-on-one situations, effectively keeping Yankuba Minteh in check for most of the game. However, his positioning in relation to the left center-back was less than convincing.
He played a key role in intercepting long balls and handled them with composure. Additionally, he switched play seamlessly when Gambia attempted to isolate him in direct one-on-one situations.
Rating
6

Daniel AnyembeDefense
It was not the usual work rate from the defender, as he struggled in the left center-back position. He found it difficult to cover space and track back when his defensive partner pushed forward. His defending in the goal area was unconvincing, and his distribution was below par. To make matters worse, two of Gambia’s three goals came from his side.
Rating
4

Brian Mandela OnyangoDefense
Returning to the national team after a long absence and going straight into the starting lineup highlights the importance of the former Tusker defender. His appearance showcased his class, particularly in commanding his area, distributing the ball, and providing leadership.
However, he showed signs of sluggishness and was fortunate not to be exposed, as the opposition lacked pace in attack.
Rating
5

Anthony AkumuMidfield
Akumu struggled with his ball distribution and passing, lacking the usual precision and impact he brings to the national team. He seemed out of sync, rarely involved in the build-up play, and failed to provide the defensive cover expected in midfield.
Without the ball, he did not shield the backline effectively, leaving the team exposed. As a result, Gambia found space to unleash long-range shots, putting goalkeeper Ian Otieno under pressure.
Rating
3

Richard OdadaMidfield
As one of the team's box-to-box midfielders, Odada lacked directness in his passing and failed to provide the necessary penetration against the opposition. Additionally, he struggled to fulfill his role as a key link in midfield, limiting the team's attacking transitions.
Rating
4

Ismail GonzalezMidfield
Another player who returned to the national team and went straight into the starting lineup, he struggled to make an impact. Early in the game, he was involved in build-up play, but there was a clear disconnect between defense and attack. His struggles in midfield made it difficult for Kenya to break through the opposition.
With his influence waning, the coach opted for an early change, and he did not return for the second half.
Rating
3

John AvireAttack
The wingers had minimal involvement in the game, though not entirely their fault. However, the few moments they did get on the ball lacked any real attacking threat.
Rating
4

Eric JohanaMidfield
Just like Avire, he had little impact on the game today as they had limited contact with the ball.
Rating
4

Michael OlungaAttack
The captain was isolated in the first half, struggling to make an impact. However, with more support in the second half, he improved significantly, linking up well with his teammates and showcasing his leadership qualities. He also converted a penalty to spark Stars' comeback.
Rating
6

Jonah AyungaAttack
When Ayunga came on, he won the penalty and played a crucial role in allowing Olunga to push forward with his intelligent drop-offs.
His movement on and off the ball was impressive, making clever runs in behind the defense and consistently positioning himself in the box for deliveries.
Rating
6

Mohammed BajaberAttack
**Star Boy!** A standout performance for the national team. The substitutes made a strong impact, and he was no exception. The Kenya Police forward delivered quality crosses and won most of his one-on-one duels.
He was excellent at receiving the ball outside the area and driving forward, which ultimately led to his stunning goal for the Stars. Additionally, he provided valuable support on the flanks, easing the defensive burden on Erick Ouma.
Rating
7

William LenkupaeMidfield
He looks like a decent player with a touch of flair. He knows when to drive forward and when to pick out a good pass. His positioning was also impressive, showing good awareness of when to make runs into the box.
While his attacking qualities will be valuable for the national team, he offers little defensively, making him more of an offensive asset.
Rating
6

Rooney OnyangoDefense
He was strong in one-on-one situations, delivered quality balls in the opponent’s half, and constantly pushed forward to support the attack.
Rating
6

Duke AbuyaMidfield
Playing in an unfamiliar midfield role, Abuya worked hard to link up the defense and midfield. His efforts helped improve transitions, bringing more fluidity to the game.
Rating
4

Masoud Juma ChokaAttack
Masoud showed some bright moments and seems to be gradually returning to his best. He had a chance to score with a header but failed to convert. However, his intelligent runs behind defenders and sharp positioning were encouraging signs ahead of the Gabon encounter.
