Former Arsenal, Barcelona and Ajax player suffered a stroke in December and has been recovering slowly ever since

Marc Overmars, 50, the former prolific winger that spent his career playing for Ajax, Arsenal and Barcelona, suffered a stroke a few months ago that has left him with significant physical scars.

He continues to work as the sports director of Belgian side Royal Antwerp FC, after having to leave Ajax due to a case of sexual harassment in which the club determined that "he had exceeded the limits".

Overmars gave 'Het LaatsteNieuws' his first interview since he suffered the stroke and explained his atrocious health.

"I have to catch my breath when I talk a lot, and it takes energy to stay focused. My heart is 45% dead. But you shouldn't feel sorry for me. I'm a happy man. I just have to distribute my energy as best I can."

Since his arrival at Royal Antwerp, the team has improved a lot and has just been proclaimed Cup champion.

"If there are important points or meetings on the agenda, I focus on them. I can recover the next day. I'd rather die here than do nothing", comments the former player with a determination necessary to continue his life despite such a severe health issue.
