Out of the blue: Terzić resigns as Borussia's boss

Reading Time: 3min | Thu. 13.06.24. | 14:45

It is yet unknown if the rift with Mats Hummels was the reason for this move

Borussia Dortmund‘s first man and CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has been a huge fan of Edin Terzić. Whenever there were talks of sacking the young manager and a childhood Borussia fan, Watzke would just stop stories immediately. The only way Terzić was gonna get sacked was if he failed to qualify for the Champions League, which he managed by going all the way to the finals and securing an additional spot for a Bundesliga team which happened to be – Dortmund. So, when the news broke today that Edin Terzić is leaving the club, it was a natural shock.

But as Sky Sport Germany reports, it was the coach himself which offered his resignation last night and today it was confirmed at the meeting with Terzić, Ricken, Watzke, Kehl and Sammer. Edin left the building around noon, while others stayed at the meeting to discuss the next moves.

"Dear Borussia fans, even though it is really hurting me right now, I would like to tell you that I will be leaving BVB today. It was a huge honour to be able to lead this great club to a DFB Cup victory and most recently to a Champions League final. I asked those responsible for a meeting after our final at Wembley because after ten years at BVB, including five years on the coaching team and two and a half years as head coach, I feel that the upcoming new start should be accompanied by a new man on the sidelines. Everyone who knows me knows that during this decision-making process of the past few weeks, two hearts have been beating in my chest. But even after intensive discussions, my basic feeling has not changed. I always wish Borussia Dortmund only the very best and don't say goodbye, but see you again. Hey, BVB!" said Terzić in an official statement.

"I have worked with Edin Terzic for a long time and in a spirit of trust during his time as youth coach, as technical director and most recently as head coach. In all positions, it was a privilege for him to be able to work for this club. Many conversations in recent days have once again highlighted this love and passion for BVB. Edin will always be a Borussia fan and part of the BVB family," said Borussia Dortmund's sports director, Lars Ricken, who will replace the club‘s CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke next season.

Many now believe that a conflict between Terzić and Mats Hummels was the reason as apparently the defender said to the board that he will stay at the club only if the coach goes. Was that the trigger for Terzić to offer his resignation or not nobody knows now. It is also unknow will BVB appoint his second in command Nuri Sahin as the new coach, or will they start a wide search for a new boss.
