Onana defends Garnacho over gorilla emoji

FA is looking to punish the player for breaching the rules

Alejandro Garnacho is in the media spotlight these days for the wrong reasons. After being criticized for digging into the penalty spot with his boots before Jordan Larsson's penalty kick, the Argentinian from Manchester United is now facing accusations of racism for inappropriately celebrating Andre Onana's save of that penalty. Social networks are a necessary evil of the modern age; over time, the world has gone in the wrong direction, but it has to be said that the young Argentinian was reckless, to say the least.

After the triumph over Copenhagen in which Onana saved United's skin by saving a penalty in the seventh minute of stoppage time, Garnacho posted a photo on social media to show who the hero was, but he did it in the wrong way since he also posted emoticons symbolizing a gorilla. The photo was deleted after 15 minutes, but the Football Association of England is merciless and the Argentine is under investigation for breaching the code of conduct. Since Garnacho once again found himself under a barrage of criticism, Onana got involved as well, leaving a message on social networks with the following content:

"People cannot choose what I should be offended by. I know exactly what Garnacho meant: Power and strength. This matter should go no further" the Cameroonian wrote.

Erik Ten Hag came to Garnacho defence and indicated that Onana's message was sufficient proof that there was no evil intention.

"Not concerned about a ban in this moment. We are talking with the FA. But what you see and I can confirm that and I want to emphasize, we are together, we are United and we have seen that in the post of Andre Onana" said the Dutchman.

Former United striker Edinson Cavani was banned for three games and fined 100,000 in 2020 for using the Spanish term "negrito" (small black person) below an Instagram post. The previous year Bernardo Silva was given a one-match ban and fined by the FA for a tweet he posted comparing teammate Benjamin Mendy with a black cartoon character. The Dutchman does not have the luxury of losing Garnacho now, as the city derby with Manchester City at Old Trafford is scheduled for Sunday at 17.30. In the absence of Jadon Sancho and Antonio, the Argentine is the first option on the left wing.
