Okay Bayern, why don't you just buy Leverkusen’s entire squad?

The Bavarians are using the same approach they once used to take players from Dortmund

Bayern had a “strategy” about ten years ago—targeting their biggest rival at the time, Borussia Dortmund, by poaching their best players.

The logic was clear: strengthen yourself while simultaneously weakening your main competitor. That’s how players like Mario Gotze, Robert Lewandowski, and Mats Hummels made their way from the Westfalenstadion to the Allianz Arena. There were other attempts too, although not all were successful.

Bayern now plans to apply that same tactic this summer—only this time the target is Bayer Leverkusen, last season's champions and current biggest title rival. Today, major news broke that the Bavarians have already agreed personal terms with Florian Wirtz. What remains is reaching a deal with Leverkusen over the transfer fee.

But then, Florian Plettenberg, a well-known German football insider, dropped another big update: Jonathan Tah is also in talks with Bayern! And not only that—he’s reportedly their top defensive target for the summer transfer window. Tah is set to leave Leverkusen at the end of June when his contract expires. While it had seemed like he was all but set to join Barcelona, and then came reports of talks with Real Madrid, today it’s Bayern who are reportedly in advanced negotiations.

Bayern’s trump card? Super agent Pini Zahavi, who represents Tah and has a strong relationship with the Bavarian club. That’s why it wouldn’t be a surprise at all if the German international ends up in Munich rather than with his current coach—and soon-to-be Real Madrid manager—Xabi Alonso.
